Padinago's trip to Iceland in 2023

Day 10 - Exploring the Krafla area

Breakfast at 8am and we leave around 9am. Our first stop is at the Reykjahlíðarkirkja. In the Mývatnseldar volcanic eruption in 1724/29, the lava flow destroyed the farm, but spared the church and flowed on each side of it!
We drive on Kröfluvegur to the Krafla area and about 3 km later we see the Krafla geothermal shower, we stop for pictures (not for a shower). Then we drive on to Leirhnjúkur where we find the lava fields of Krafla. The Leirhnjúkur crater is the most impressive attraction in the volcanic area of Krafla. Although its last eruption was in 1984, it's still very much active! We make a long walk and we still see some smoke coming up from the crevasses. This is amazing!
Then we drive to Viti crater and walk up to see the lake. Then we drive back to Grjótagja, we walk around to search a hidden cave and found one with beautiful blue water. In the mean time we've met a Golden Plover.
Then back to the guesthouse and enjoy a long time in the hot tub are we were all alone. Then a shower and dinner at the hotel, Patrick has the trout and Nathalie has the lamb. Great staff, especially Valentina in the restaurant in the evening.
