Day 14 - Exploring Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
Breakfast around 7am and then we drive to Jökulsárlón, glacier lagoon. On the way we spot a Snipe and a Whimbrel.
When we arrive at the glacier lake we walk around. We had booked in advance a zodiac tour so around 11.20am we get at the meeting point, get our protective suit and life jacket. When we get on board it stops raining and the fog disappears a bit so we have a nice view on the glacier. We see a seal, the boat goes in between the icebergs to the glacier 'Breiðamerkurjökull', very close view!
As a glacier lagoon, Jökulsárlón is a lake that is filled with meltwater from an outlet glacier. In this case, it is Breiðamerkurjökull, a tongue of Europe’s largest ice cap, Vatnajökull! In spite of being a rather recent formation, Jökulsárlón is the deepest lake in the country, with depths of 248 meters (814 feet). With a surface area of 18 square kilometers (7 square miles), it is also growing to be one of the largest.
Jökulsárlón has been featured in the James Bond films A View to Kill in 1985 and Die Another Day in 2002, 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and 2005’s Batman Begins.
Then we drive a bit further to Diamond beach. When the icebergs finally make it across the lagoon, they either drift out to sea or wash up on the nearby shore. Because of the way they glisten against the black sands of Breiðamerkursandur, this area has been nicknamed ‘the Diamond Beach’. At low tide you can walk on the beach between the icebergs, what we did… wauw!!!
Then to Fjallsárlón, also a glacier with a glacier lake and icebergs. Here we can see the glacier very well. Then to the 'Jon Eriksson monument' and then a drive on gravel to Heinabergslón. We walk to the glacier lake where we are all alone. We cannot see the glacier but the icebergs. A beautiful milky lake with beautiful icebergs. It is a difficult drive on gravel but worth it. Then back to the hotel, shower and dinner at the hotel. We have a friendly waitress from Spain, Elena.
