Day 6 - From Rapid City to Sheridan, WY
Today we drive to Sheridan. The road brings us through mountains where we can enjoy all kinds of landscapes, beautiful waterfalls…
We arrive in Deadwood, a small mine workers’ town where we go to a diner and enjoy a good breakfast. We are served by a friendly chewing lady with the real American accent. Deadwood gets its name from the ‘dead’ little trees on the hills surrounding the town.
After breakfast we continue towards the next town, Lead where there is a huge gold mine. We go for a walk and see our first marmot!
We continue towards President’s park. This is a park with huge busts of all the presidents. We decide to visit the park which is very nice!
We drive ahead and pass a.o. the Bridal Veil Falls and finally reach Devils Tower in Wyoming! In the middle of the valley stands this gigantic rock! At the foot of the rock we drive through prairies with hundreds of prairie dogs, very cute animals. We reach the parking and decide to walk around Devils Tower. This is an easy slightly uphill path from where you enjoy at all times the view on the tower and the valleys.
After the walk we have a quick pit stop and drive to Fort Phil Kearny. Apparently it is almost closing time but they allow us to have a quick visit of the museum. We decide to do this first and afterwards visit the fort outside. It seems that there is not a lot left from this fort and on the top of the hills in a far distance you can see dolls of horses with soldiers which gives a nice feeling like if you were back in time...
In the late afternoon we reach Sheridan and a local lady which I talked to on the street gives us the address of a good place to have dinner. This was the best steak ever, which will be hard to equal!
